This week’s session features music by LA based, by way of Brooklyn New York, shoegaze/indie rock band, DIIV. DIIV performed two songs, “Horsehead” and “Blankenship” from their latest album Deceiver accompanied by art created by Ben Newman.

DIIV formed in New York City in 2011. After playing with various bands in the area, vocalist/ guitarist Zachary Cole Smith craved a space for his expression and music. A blend of his eclectic taste and inspiration. Over the past nine years, the lineup has shifted, but today Andrew Bailey (guitar), Colin Caulfield (bass), Ben Newman (drums), and Smith round out DIIV.

In 2012 they released their debut album, Oshin via Captured Tracks. Smith wrote and produced the album. In regards to the album’s lyrics, Smith admitted he was hiding a bit. “I didn’t want it to be about me as a person. The lyrics were almost like universal truths, not personal.” As a songwriter, a lot has changed. DIIV’s 2019 LP, Deceiver, took the opposite approach. For Smith, the songwriting process became cathartic and a large part of his recovery from substance abuse. Via a statement to fans, Smith described the album as “the soundtrack to personal resurrection under the heavy weight of metallic catharsis.”

The newfound vulnerability caught online critics’ attention. Paste Magazine praised the album saying, “Cole’s experiences in rehab became the inspiration for the group’s latest record, Deceiver, and while the album displays the group’s darkest sound yet, it also ends up being their most earnest.”

Now in 2020, DIVV is doing better than ever as individuals and as a collective. You can catch them on tour now and stream, Deceiver here.

The art featured in this Sidestripe Sessions episode comes from Ben Newman. Ben Newman is a talented artist and musician. Newman joined DIIV in early 2015 and provided back cover and label paintings for the band’s 2019 release, Deceiver.

Vans Sidestripe Sessions are a global series celebrating collaboration, diversity, and expression through music and art. The two-song sessions feature performances from Vans’ extended family of musicians, backdropped by original art installations from emerging artists. Each session is unique in sight and sound.

Vans – This week’s session features music by Californian punk band, Ceremony. Ceremony performed two songs, “We Can Be Free” and “In The Spirit World Now,” accompanied by art created by Greg Ito. Formed in Rohnert Park, California, in 2005, Ceremony didn’t set out to change the punk/hardcore scene; they were solely looking for something to do. Despite their original intentions, the Bay Area natives quickly released their first EP Ruined in 2005 via Malfunction Records. After signing to Matador Records in 2011, their lineup solidified with Ross Farrar (vocals), Anthony Anzaldo (guitar), Justin Davis (bass), Andy Nelson (guitar), and Jake Casarotti (drums). Described as “power violence,” Ceremony found their hungry and eager audience by playing basement shows, clubs, and connecting with the scene. Soon, they’d find themself touring the world and gaining attention from music blogs, critics, and established bands like AFI and Converge. Their devoted fan base grew, and it wasn’t uncommon to see them line up around the block from their next club stops. To date, Ceremony released six studio albums, including their 2019 LP, In the Spirit World Now. Ito is a multidisciplinary artist who uses paintings, sculpture, and installation to tailor immersive experiences with a playful approach to cinematic visual cues. Ito’s language is a lexicon of symbols, images, and color schemes aimed to evoke emotional responses to the shared human experience revolving around themes of companionship, hope, loss, and tragedy. PENTACOASTAL: A Surf Film Directed by Wade Goodall & Shane Fletch…

Vans – “PENTACOASTAL” was inspired by the tonalities of Australian cult cinema. Directors Wade Goodall & Shane Fletcher have merged these filmic elements within the body of a surf film through emotive animations, an undulating soundscape, and a subliminal narrative which follows a quasi-recursive map depicted by a pentagram drawn on the map of Australia. “A recollection of Australasian exploration following a quasi-recursive map, with elemental moments of expressive wave worship.” Featuring Wade Goodall, Dane Reynolds, Harry Bryant, Nathan Fletcher, Pat Gudauskas, Dylan Graves, Nathan Florence, Tanner Gudauskas & Kyuss King Music Credits: Soundtrack by Grinderman, 35007, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Windhand, Goons of Doom, plus original compositions from Black Waves, Thom Pringle, Nathan Fletcher, Shane Fletcher and more.
