The thing that always bothered us about “Day In The Life” sections is how they looked so planned and scripted. Like the camera guy comes in and “wakes the skater up,” they visit a couple of cool spots, “accidentally” bump into all their homies, crack a beer, and fade to black.

So naturally (stupidly) for this segment, we did the total opposite. If you aren’t familiar with Bing Liu, he is the Oscar-nominated documentarian behind Minding the Gap. But before he directed Obama’s favorite documentary of 2018, Bing grew up like most of us, skating and filming with his friend in some boring suburb.

We went uptown to meet Bing at Columbia University so he could show off his Ivy League switch flip, then took an Uber (and got pulled over by the cops) to skate the nearby Lenox Ledges, and ended the day dorking around on casper stalls for the kids at Thomas Jefferson Park.

Watch to hear Bing’s thoughts on the difficulties of putting skating on the big screen, and how wrangling skaters to go film clips oddly prepared him to wrangle friends to do intense interviews about abusive childhoods. Low-key film school shit right here.

JENKEM – Revisiting the Water Tower Ollie w/ Jeremy Wray | jenke…

jenkemmag – In 1997, Jeremy Wray did one of the greatest tricks ever done on a skateboard – a 16-foot ollie from one water tower to the next. For years, we’ve wanted to talk to Wray about his water tower ollie, so while we were out in California we tracking him down and convinced him to meet us close to the towers, about an hour outside of LA. And if it wasn’t nostalgic enough, we even had to hop the fence to stand in between the towers and soak in the madness.
