The thing that always bothered us about “Day In The Life” sections is how they looked so planned and scripted. Like the camera guy comes in and “wakes the skater up,” they visit a couple of cool spots, “accidentally” bump into all their homies, crack a beer, and fade to black.

So naturally (stupidly) for this segment, we did the total opposite. If you aren’t familiar with Bing Liu, he is the Oscar-nominated documentarian behind Minding the Gap. But before he directed Obama’s favorite documentary of 2018, Bing grew up like most of us, skating and filming with his friend in some boring suburb.

We went uptown to meet Bing at Columbia University so he could show off his Ivy League switch flip, then took an Uber (and got pulled over by the cops) to skate the nearby Lenox Ledges, and ended the day dorking around on casper stalls for the kids at Thomas Jefferson Park.

Watch to hear Bing’s thoughts on the difficulties of putting skating on the big screen, and how wrangling skaters to go film clips oddly prepared him to wrangle friends to do intense interviews about abusive childhoods. Low-key film school shit right here.

JENKEM – Introducing AceMoMA, the Skaters Behind our New Record …

jenkemmag – BUY THE VINYL: https://jenkemmag.myshopify.com/products/the-acemoma-ep DIGITAL / STREAM: https://music.apple.com/us/album/acemoma-ep/1468629285 Surprise: we’ve pressed another record, and today we want to introduce you all to the boys behind the second release under Jenkem Recordings. Ace and Wyatt, who make music and perform under the names AceMo and MoMA Ready, have become staples in the underground electronic music scene here in New York. Our friend Mike Bloom (Musician & OG resident of the Jenkem House in upstate New York) introduced us to them and suggested we meet up to skate LES and talk music. We hit it off pretty naturally and being fans of Drum & Bass, Techno House and most genres of electronic music, we were fans of what they did. This one was extra special because for the first time ever, the two friends decided to join forces under the alias AceMoMA for this EP with us. This is our second release under Jenkem Recordings, which we are hoping to shape as a music platform to empower other friends, skate-inspired artists and just shit we like, pretty much. The AceMoMA EP is available today on vinyl via our shop, and digitally on all other platforms where you can buy/stream/steal music: http://www.jenkemmag.com/home/2019/07/10/introducing-acemoma/
JENKEM - Catching Up With Kevin, The Traveling Skate Mag Librarian | jenkemmag

JENKEM – Catching Up With Kevin, The Traveling Skate Mag Librari…

jenkemmag – We first met Kevin in 2016 when we visited his home in San Diego. He had just started his Look Back Library project, organizing thousands of old skateboard magazines with a goal to build publicly accessible skate mag libraries around the globe. Now, Kevin has taken his project on the road, driving around to skate shops, gathering mag donations at each stop, and building free libraries across the U.S. (as well as in a few other countries). To date he’s built 80 different libraries. Kevin’s project is half green initiative — giving second lives to old magazines that might otherwise end up in a landfill — and half utter dedication to skate history. And to get it done, he more or less lives out of his trusty blue van for most of the year, sleeping on a bed above crates of more Skateboarders, Thrashers, and indie mags than we’ve ever seen. We caught up with Kevin at the halfway point of a six-month long trek across the U.S., when he was setting up a library at KCDC skate shop in Brooklyn. We were curious what it was like to live in that van with only mags to keep him company, so he gave us a tour and told us about life on the road.
