Slam Skateboarding Magazine – Lincoln Child’s Skater of the Year showreel of ledge lordery and Melbourne street mayhem. Ben Lawrie, who’s known to his mates as ‘Lincoln Child’, made the most of a strange year in Melbourne, destroying a whole spread of the city’s most iconic spots. The young fella with the heavy ledge game has taken out Australian skateboarding’s most coveted award, becoming the Slam SOTY for 2021, presented by Converse Cons. LC spent countless hours in the streets, dodging the cops, skating spots and drinking copious amounts of coffee, putting together an incredible section in Nike’s “Welcome To Melbourne”, and stacking a bunch of extra footage later seen in Geoff Campbell’s “Dill Slinger”. He also managed to shoot a bunch of photos for an incredible feature interview in our Spring Edition. At that time, Melbourne was in a heavy lockdown and the rules for skateboarding weren’t exactly clear. LC said, “It’s pretty stressful trying to film and skate at the moment.” But despite the police pressure, knocking his front teeth out, and going through multiple lockdowns, LC still managed to take out SOTY. Filmed and edited by Geoff Campbell. Additional filming by Neihana Tonkin, Nico Tavella and Rowan Davis. Congrats to LC and thanks to all of those who cast their votes for our 2021 SOTY.

X Games – In 1995, ESPN introduced The Extreme Games to the masses. Billed as a weeklong competition, The Extreme Games (later changed to X Games) brought out the top action sports athletes in the world, across skateboarding, BMX, inline skating and more. At the time, Tony Hawk was one of a few veteran pro skateboarders on the scene, successfully making the jump past the skateboarding craze of the 1980s, into a more underground, authentic scene spawned during the 1990s. But all that was about to change. With a boost of commercial exposure from ESPN and The Extreme Games, Tony Hawk would become one of the most recognized names in skateboarding throughout the world. And to this day, Tony’s name is synonymous with skateboarding, thanks in part to the momentum created here. Take a look back at Tony’s first vert and “street” runs from July, 1995. And oh yeah, Tony took home the first Extreme Games gold medal in Skateboard Vert. — X Games is your premier destination for all things action sports, music, lifestyle and everything in between.
